Scholarship Program Overview
The Maryland Women of Asphalt (MD WofA) strives to empower women pursuing careers in the asphalt industry by increasing awareness of opportunities, elevating knowledge through education and research, and creating a strong support network. In alignment with these core values, MD WofA is proud to offer a scholarship program that awards financial assistance to women seeking to begin or advance careers in the asphalt industry.
Eligibility Requirements
Who may apply?
Applicants must:
- Be female
- Meet one of the following criteria:
- A Maryland high school senior (Class of 2026) entering a field-related trade school (e.g., equipment mechanic, CDL driver, field technician, welding)
B. A Maryland high school senior (Class of 2026) enrolling in a university program related to civil engineering, construction management, or a similar field
C. A female currently enrolled in a higher education institution in a field related to the asphalt industry
D. A female currently employed in the asphalt industry in Maryland, returning to school or taking classes to further her career
Note: Members and immediate family of Maryland Women of Asphalt or Maryland Asphalt Association may receive preferential consideration.
Application Process
How and when do I apply?
- Complete the application online at https://marylandwofa.com/educational-trust-application/
- Deadline: All applications must be received by January 15, 2026
- Incomplete applications will be returned. Revised applications must also be submitted by the deadline.
- You will receive a confirmation email once your application is received.
Judging Criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on overall merit. The MD WofA Educational Trust Scholarship Committee will consider:
- A. Scholastic standing (minimum GPA of 3.0)
- B. Career goals
- C. Past employment
- D. Required essay
- E. Thoroughness and completeness of the application
Confidentiality
To protect applicant identity and privacy:
- Each application is assigned a unique ID number upon receipt.
- Only one designated MD WofA representative will handle applications and redact any identifying information.
- Committee members review only anonymous, redacted versions.
- If a committee member recognizes an applicant, they must recuse themselves from evaluation.
- Only winning envelopes will be opened; all others will be destroyed.
Required Documents
For High School Students:
- Official high school transcript (through the most recent grading period prior to December 2025.
- Letter of recommendation from a faculty member including class rank and size
- Essay (see below for requirements)
- Proof of acceptance and commitment to a trade school, college, or university
For Industry Professionals:
- Letter of recommendation from a supervisor, company VP/President, or professor
- Essay explaining what continuing education means to you
Essay Requirements
- Word Limit: 500 words
- Font: Arial
- Font Size: 12 pt.
- Spacing: double spaced
- Essays should address personal goals, need for the scholarship, industry involvement, and/or extracurricular activities.
Award Information
- Awards will be announced via email.
- Scholarship recipients and their families must attend Maryland Asphalt Association Paving Conference (March 2026) to accept the award in person.
- Award amounts range from $500 to $1,500, depending on number of applications and available funds.
- Scholarships will be paid directly to the designated school or institution.
